Ever thought about writing a book and retire early?

In this article I'm going to show you the KEY to self-publishing success. You will find out what makes a business-mind or entrepreneurial author successful in the publishing field.

Here's 5 TIPS for the Entrepreneurial Author:

1. The right mindset leads to success

Serious authors have 'programmed' their mind to succeed no matter what obstacles they may face. They focus on their objectives and allow nothing to stop in their plans to the door of their goals. For many getting the book in print is merely the first step to their entrepreneurial goal.

Successful authors know what they want and possess the desire to succeed. If you don't know exactly what you want when it comes to the publishing effort, think about your business goals and re-consider your plans, and then outline what you want to achieve for your short and long term goals.

2. The plan in written

Like entrepreneurs smart authors know that it takes time to start and grow a profitable business- the same can be said for the publishing business. Therefore outlining the plan is essential for success. When all the goals are incorporated into a plan, it's easy to see if it is possible to achieve the objectives while flaws can be corrected and adjusted along the way.

Entrepreneurial authors know that it takes discipline and time to build a strong and solid business and it takes a good businessmen to deliver a successful plan for continual growth.

3. Research - vital for success

Authors have to treat their undertaking like entrepreneurs and engage in market research to ensure success. Successful authors would not waste time on an idea where there is no demand and market for it. In today's competitive world the winning edge is what you'll need to succeed though this may even mean serving to a smaller but well defined niche market.

Find out who your target market is and how you can reach them. Learn about your target market and understand them and their consumer behaviour. Work out ways of marketing tactics to reach them. Do a survey parallel to your marketing tactics. When you understand them, you'll be able to provide the demands and identify how to pack your information successfully.

4. Marketing brings success

Study successful non-fiction authors in the market today (Brian Tracy, Robert Kiyosaki etc). Observe how they market their books with their most successful products and you'll notice the complexity of marketing strategies they apply.

You don't need to re-invent the wheel, you just have to fit it to your plan. Customize the existing marketing concepts to fit the needs of your target reader. What would they need? How will you provide their demands?

5. Diversify or die

There is a natural life circle to every product - good or bad, and declination comes with it. Only a handful of books become "classics", and even these classics don't sell much like they used to. Smart authors know that they have to diversify and reshape their product constantly. If it's a guide book, you'll need to update every two years to keep up with the new changes around. Alternatively, reshaping the content for seminar or workshop purposes would give new life to your product, open a new market and guarantee additional sales.

Keep an eye on your sales rate, at the peak and once sales growth rate slows down, it's time for diversification. Create and develop a new edition (especially for timely information), reshape your information material or invest in opening up a new market segment.

Serious author-preneurs are ready to invest - in time and money - recognizing the basis in building a successful long-term business.
